Grades 1-2: Read age-appropriate materials accurately and fluently; identify prose and poetry; identify plot, setting, and characters in a story; construct complete sentences; learn the basics of parts of speech, spelling, and punctuation; expand vocabulary
Grades 3-5: Read age-appropriate materials accurately and fluently; guess meanings of words using various clues; expand vocabulary; identify literary elements and techniques; identify genres; write complete and organized paragraphs using correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling; edit and proofread
Grades 6-8: Analyze words and phrases in context; expand vocabulary; summarize texts; identify characteristics and authors of various literary forms; discuss development of theme, plot, characters, and setting in a literary work; compose long, well-organized essays/poems in various genres using correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling to convey an idea; edit and proofread

Grades 3-5: (Use Everyday Mathematics series) Order whole numbers, fractions, and decimals; perform four operations fluently; understand properties and order of operations; use ratios and measurement conversions; measure geometric figures and make computations; solve linear equations in one variable; use basic statistical and probabilistic concepts; make predictions
Grades 6-8: (Use Big Ideas in Mathematics series) Use/convert fractions, decimals, percentages, exponents, scientific notation, square roots, powers; understand multiplicative properties of integers; make computations (including length, area, volume) using different kinds of real numbers; solve real-life problems with linear equations and inequalities; analyze data with sophisticated techniques
